Traditional Christmas-themed markets in the historic centre of Olomouc are among the most magical not only in the Czech Republic.

What can you look forward to?

The Upper and Lower squares and the market area will offer a Christmas town with a wide range of handmade handicrafts of various kinds, delicious products not only of regional cuisine (including of course classic gingerbread, sweets, etc.), the famous Olomouc punch of many flavours or other warming drinks for children and adults and also the traditional carp sale. You can see all the stalls, the decorated tree, the town hall and the Holy Trinity Column from the wooden lookout. In Olomouc, there will be over 140 sales stalls and dozens of different performances.

For children

For children, there is a historic wooden carousel and a bell with a bell in the Upper Square, which is sure to make children's secret wishes come true... In the Lower Square, children and parents can visit Santa's workshop with the post office or see the large hand-carved nativity scene. In the Market Square, you can take a ride on the giant Olomouc Wheel, from which you can see the city lit up for Christmas, and also on the Christmas tram.

Events Come and see the Christmas tree lighting ceremony or later welcome St. Nicholas accompanied by cute devils and beautiful angels. The Christmas market will of course also be accompanied by a rich cultural programme. Concerts, small theatrical performances or a Christmas cinema will surely put you in the right Christmas mood...

When do the Christmas markets take place? This year, the stalls will open on 22 November, with sales closing on 23 December 2024.

Do you know

  • In Olomouc, large cribs carved out of wood can be seen on Dolní náměstí and Wenceslas Square (next to St. Wenceslas Cathedral).
  • In the Capuchin Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary on Olomouc's Lower Square, you can see a nativity scene with figures up to 70 cm high and there is also a 1.5 metre elephant.
  • Also remarkable are the cribs in St. Wenceslas Cathedral on Olomouc's Wenceslas Square, which are partly mechanical. There are some figures in motion, ducks on the pond or a windmill.
  • The cribs in Olomouc's St. Morice Church on 8 May Street are made of olive wood and show not only the story of the birth of Jesus, but also other events in biblical history.
