If you go on a trip to these precious metal-rich areas, don't forget to stop in the valley of the Lost Gulches and gold and ore mills in the locality of Zlaté Hory. The Olešnice River has been depositing gold here for millions of years and has been mined in ancient times. And today you can try gold panning!
The nature trail around the settlement also leads to a place with an admirable optical illusion, where the water "flows uphill". Right in the settlement you will find a replica of water-powered medieval mining mills made according to period drawings, or a melting furnace.
The furnace building consists of an outdoor covered part - the smelting room and an indoor work hall with hand-powered bellows. Next, you will find a replica of a miner's cabin, which is presented with an outdoor and residential part.
In the Middle Ages, the mining settlement was an enclosed fortified complex where mined ore was processed and where miners lived their everyday lives. The bell tower is also inseparable from the building. It symbolises the 'beer bell', which was introduced for the local miners by the new mining law in 1524 by Bishop James of Salza. A wooden replica of the watchtower stands on the access road to the mining village, which is accessible and serves as a lookout point.
There is also a racecourse with competition horses in the vicinity of the mining settlement. These areas are used for the annual gold panning competitions. The tradition of gold panning was established in Zlaté Hory in 1993. The culminating competition was the World Championship in this discipline in 2010.
It's only a short walk to the Postal Adit or the Museum in the Golden Mountains. The open-air museum is located about 3 km from the Zlaté Hory (road direction Mikulovice).
You can park in 2 car parks in the immediate vicinity of the open-air museum. The nearest railway stop is located in Ondřejovice (less than 2 km from the site), the bus stop is even closer to the open-air museum, about 600m away.
