The oldest and longest-running manufactory in Europe represents the origin of (un)ordinary paper, which has accompanied mankind for thousands of years.

Jan the Younger of Žerotín had a paper mill built on the site of the former mill and by the end of the 16th century the first paper sheets from the Losiny workshop were already being written on. In the second half of the 17th century, the region was hit by the infamous witch trials, and the paper mill was not spared the rampage of the Inquisition. Among others, the life of Barbara Göttlich, the wife of the then papermaker of Velkolosin, ended in flames at the border. The late Baroque and Classicist appearance, as we know it today, was given to the premises at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Thanks to its excellent qualities, the handmade paper from Velké Losiny survived the industrial revolution of the first half of the 20th century, in 1949 the factory became part of the national enterprise Olšanské papírny and since 2006 this national cultural monument has been managed by the joint-stock company Handmade Paper Mill Velké Losiny.

Tours

A visit to the Handmade Paper Workshop includes a tour of the Paper Museum with demonstrations of traditional products, Asian technology and all kinds of machinery and equipment, as well as an excursion to the manufactory itself, where visitors can see for themselves the mixing of the mixture in the holander, pumping into vats and then removing the sheets and finishing them by sprouting and smoothing. In the summer months, the offer is supplemented by a second tour which takes visitors inside the mill and its technical facilities. The Velké Losiny Handmade Paper Mill also organises several thematic events during the year. Its products, as well as other products, not only paper, are offered all year round in the local shop.
