Bouzov Castle

Bouzov

In the middle of the forests stands one of the most visited and most charming castles in the country, the romantic Bouzov Castle with its countless towers and bastions. Many kings and princesses have crossed the two drawbridges arching over the castle moat, as this place is a paradise of fairy tales and films.

However, the castle of Bouzov, which was owned by the Order of German Knights, only imitates a perfect medieval mansion. Until 1696 Bouzov Castle was owned alternately by members of various Czech and Moravian families, then the estate and the castle were bought by the Order of German Knights. Since 1945 it has been owned by the Sate. In 1999 it was declared a national cultural monument.

Bouzov Castle acquired its present appearance as a typical romantic mansion with battlements, acrylics, loopholes and gargoyles after extensive reconstruction in 1895-1910. Two drawbridges and a drawbridge are unique.

History of the castle

The castle was founded at the beginning of the 14th century by Buz of Búzov. From the middle of the 14th century it passed into the hands of the Lords of Vildenberk, who sold the estate to the Moravian Margrave Jošt in 1382. In 1396, he then left Bouzov to his follower Heralt of Kunštát. The castle remained in the hands of the Lords of Kunštát, with short interruptions, almost until the end of the 15th century. It was then that the estate reached its greatest prosperity. It is probable that the later Czech King George of Poděbrady was born at Bouzov Castle, as his father Viktorín was evidently based there. In 1442 Jiří of Poděbrady left the estate to his follower Zdeněk Kostka of Postupice. Between 1472 and 1696 the castle was owned by many different Czech and Moravian families. From 1696 until 1939 the estate was owned by the Order of German Knights. During the Nazi occupation, the castle became the seat of an SS raiding party, which burnt down the village of Javoříčko on 5 May 1945.

The castle acquired its present appearance after extensive reconstruction, which began at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The reason for the reconstruction was the plan of Archduke Eugene of Habsburg to convert the building into a summer residence for nobility. This created the perfect illusion of a massive medieval mansion where several artistic styles intermingled.

The interior of the castle

The furnishings of Bouzov Castle come mainly from the private collections of Archduke Eugene and partly from the collections of the Order of German Knights. The modern furnishings were made especially for the building. The most valuable part of the castle is the Neo-Gothic castle chapel, equipped with a Gothic altar and decorated with tombstones of the masters of the Order. The castle's armoury, the original Gothic hall, the Column Hall and the representative rooms - the Knights' Hall and the Hunting Hall - are also worthy of attention.
