Úsov Castle is one of the oldest preserved North Moravian aristocratic mansions, built in the style of a French castle. The castle's hunting and forestry museum is a unique collection of its kind in the whole of Central Europe. You can see unique collections of hunting trophies.

Forestry and Hunting Museum

The Hunting and Forestry Museum in Úsov is a unique trophy and natural science collection, which has been preserved practically in the same condition as it was installed by Prince John II of Liechtenstein at his castle in Úsov at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. You can see approximately ten thousand exhibits ranging from stuffed exotic and domestic animals, minerals, antlers and insects to models of forest buildings, hunting and curious poaching weapons. The animal trophies from foreign ranges come from the Lichtenstein expeditions not only in Europe, but also in Asia, America and Africa.

Úsov Castle

Originally a Gothic castle, it stood here as early as the first half of the 13th century, but it acquired its Baroque castle form at the end of the 17th century under the Liechtenstein rule. Since 1852, the first school for foresters in Moravia was located in the castle. The princely family owned the Usov estate until 1945, after which their property was nationalised by the Republic and the extensive castle collections were turned into a museum. After the fall of the communist government, the property was managed by the state, and since 1995 the town of Úsov has been its owner. The Hunting and Forestry Museum in Úsov is part of the Museum of Homeland History in Šumperk.

What you can look forward to

A tour of the Úsov Castle takes visitors first into its history and then they find themselves in Africa. Trophies from hunting expeditions include lions, antelopes, zebras and many other exotic animals. On the second floor you will find Central European birds and mammals, including bears and wolves, a hall dedicated to the insect world and an armoury, famous for its unique collection of weapons confiscated from poachers. Unique exhibits also include the tree library, a collection of wooden boxes containing the leaves and fruits of various trees and shrubs. In the oldest part of the castle, the Vlašim Palace, there is an exhibition called Riddles of the Lords of Vlašim - an interactive exhibition for children with a number of tricky questions and difficult tasks. You can also see the torture chamber of the former prison and on the third floor there is a permanent exhibition of paintings by the academic painter Lubomír Bartos. Traditional fairs of historical crafts and events with fairy-tale creatures are also held in Úsov and are very popular with children. There is also a children's zoo and refreshments in the castle courtyard.
