The Amber Cycle Route is one of the most popular long-distance cycle routes connecting northern Europe with the Adriatic Sea. The trail belongs to the European network of cycle routes, where it is referred to as Euro Velo 9.

It starts in Gdansk, Poland, from where it continues across Poland, through the Czech Republic, Austria and part of Slovenia to the Croatian seaside resort of Pula. Its total length is an impressive 1 930 kilometres.

The history of the Amber Trail

The Amber Road was one of the most important trade routes in the past. It got its name because merchants used it to transport thousands of kilograms of precious amber. From the Baltic regions, amber was transported further south along these trade routes to the centres of civilisation around the Mediterranean. Salt and copper were also distributed from the Alpine region northwards (to Moravia and Bohemia) along the same routes. The Amber Route in the Olomouc Region If we respect the original route from north to south, the cycle path enters the Olomouc Region from the Moravian-Silesian Region via the area known as the Moravian Gate in Hustopeče nad Bečvou.

Hustopeče nad Bečvou - Teplice nad Bečvou - Lipník nad Bečvou - Přerov - Tršice - Velká Bystřice - Olomouc - Bystročice - Prostějov - Plumlov - Repechy - Niva Treasures of the Moravian Gate

The Moravian Gate stretches along the rivers Odra and Bečva and extends as far as Přerov. The majestic Helfštýn Castle is undoubtedly the landmark of the area, but you will also find other gems here: the Hranice Abyss, which is the deepest flooded abyss in the world, and the unique Zbrašov Aragonite Caves. You can relax in the spa Teplice nad Bečvou. Picturesque Haná From Přerov, the fertile Haná, typical for its gastronomy and folklore, opens up before you. In Velké Bystřice, you can enjoy both: you can taste excellent beer and Tvargle (Olomouc tvarůžky) at the Tvarg Brewery, and you can also visit many folklore events. And then Olomouc, the Baroque pearl of Moravia with many sights, including a UNESCO monument, will welcome you.

From Olomouc you head to Prostějov and from there to Plumlov, passing the Plumlov Dam and the castle. The hills of the Drahan Uplands After Plumlov, you will have a bit of a workout, the Drahanská hills and a crossing over the Březina Military Hut - here you should respect that the military area is only temporarily accessible: Fri 3pm - 10pm and Sat, Sun, Sun 6am - 10pm.

The Amber Trail leaves the Olomouc Region just after the village of Niva, where it continues to the South Moravian Region.

The Amber Trail crosses another long-distance cycle route with the 4th Moravian Trail in Olomouc. In the Moravian Gate area, the Amber Trail often runs parallel to the Bečva cycle path. For trail lovers, we recommend the Haná Trail near the Plumlov Dam.
