Olomouc

The Premyslid Palace forms the core of the complex named Olomouc Castle and is part of the tour circuit of the Archdiocesan Museum. The most important Romanesque building monument of the palace type in the Czech lands, which had fallen into oblivion for many centuries, was "discovered" in 1867 during the renovation of a part of St. Wenceslas Cathedral. In 1962 the Romanesque Palace was declared a national cultural monument and in 1995 the whole of the former Přemyslid Castle, which includes the Dome Hill area with the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Romanesque Bishop's Palace, the Chapter Deanery and other buildings, was declared a national cultural monument.

The Romanesque palace was built in the first half of the 12th century, during the episcopate of Bishop Henry Zdík, who finished the construction of St. Wenceslas church and built his representative seat in its vicinity. Rich in ornamental stonework details, the palace building represents a work of advanced Western-European Romanesque architecture. The Bishop's Palace is the central part of the Přemyslid Castle premises and is featured in the sightseeing circuit of the Archdiocesan Museum.
